In-situ Kabela
21st annual Asian Design Gold Awards

Merkato is a large bazaar located in the center of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and one of the largest in Africa. Its sheer size has led to a high population density in the area.
It is interspersed with the Kabela House, the local name for a public house. However, due to the lack of management and maintenance, the hygiene and living conditions are similar to those of a slum.

Through the design, we hope that the residents will use the limited funds and manpower to remodel their own houses according to their business and residential needs. The design is therefore adaptable to a wide range of family structures.
The spaces to be remodeled include commercial spaces, residential spaces, and restrooms. This includes roofs, walls, and other structures. The design will provide residents with a design manual so that they can purchase locally available materials and build their own.

Thus, In-Situ Kabela's design can effectively change the living conditions of local residents with limited resources.
